What Christians Need to Know about Counseling

Why a biblical worldview matters in the counseling session.

The counseling relationship is a special one as it is centered on a desire to guide others on their quest for self-improvement. What you may not know is that several of the major counseling theories are founded on an atheist worldview.

While all Christian counselors are different, it’s important to understand your expectations for counseling in light of your Christian beliefs and values.

A formally trained Christian counselor will have learned the very important ethical, legal, and theoretical principles that creates an excellent working relationship with their client. They will also have additional study on integrating their professional knowledge within a biblical worldview.

In addition, a spiritually disciplined counselor will be understanding of their role as a partner with God in the therapeutic process. Any positive personal changes made throughout the course of therapy will be due to the Holy Spirit’s healing work.

Consult First

If you’re looking for a Christian counselor and are interested in learning more about their knowledge, skills, and techniques, consider requesting a consultation and ask a few of the following questions:

  • What is your education and training background?
  • How does your faith inform your counseling?
  • What is your view on the spiritual, relational, and biological basis of behavior?
  • Do you pray in session? Why or Why not?
  • Do you use any other spiritual interventions in session? Why or why not?

You may have an idea of what answer you’re looking for, and I encourage you to continue your journey in learning more about an integrated approach to professional Christian counseling. “Integration” refers to the process of adapting the tools and knowledge of counseling and psychological within the parameters of scripture.

Above All, Seek God

There are thousands of studies and testimonies on the effectiveness of biblically informed counseling practices. Ultimately, the therapeutic relationship has been shown time and time again to be one of the most powerful components of the process. We know that while this relationship is powerful, we want it to be a God-ordained appointment. Prayerfully seek His guidance and leadership into the right provider.
