How to Handle Stress with Confidence and Faith

“Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7

Stress is real. And if you’re a woman, a mom, or anyone with a heartbeat, you’ve probably felt it a lot lately. Some days, it’s the big things—financial struggles, health concerns, uncertainty about the future. Other days, it’s the small things—like realizing your kid used your good kitchen scissors for crafts again or finding that somehow every laundry basket is full right after you just did the laundry.

Life comes at us fast. And as much as I’d love to say that stress magically disappears once we pray about it, the truth is… that’s not how it works. But that doesn’t mean we’re powerless.

As a therapist and a Christian woman who wears many hats, I’ve learned that stress isn’t something we just “survive.” It’s something we can learn to handle—with faith, wisdom, and a little bit of strategy.

So let’s talk about five practical, biblical ways to handle stress with confidence—because yes, life is crazy, but no, you don’t have to lose your mind in the process.

1. Recognize Stress for What It Is (And What It Isn’t)

There’s a saying in parenting books that stuck with me: “Manage the environment.” If my kids are acting like wildlings, it’s not just about discipline—it’s about adjusting what’s around them. Are they overtired? Overstimulated? Did I accidentally give them sugar right before bedtime? (Oops.)

It’s the same with stress. When I start thinning on patience with my kids, snapping at my husband, or feeling like the walls are closing in, I remind myself:

👉 Stress isn’t just a problem—it’s a signal.
👉 If there’s a problem, there’s a goal. What needs to change?
👉 While I can’t control everything, there’s a lot I AM responsible for.

Stress is often my brain waving a big red flag, saying, “Hey, something here needs adjusting!” Instead of ignoring it or beating myself up for feeling overwhelmed, I try to pause and ask God for wisdom.

James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

The next time stress flares up, take a deep breath and ask: What is this stress trying to tell me?

2. Trust God’s Sovereignty—Even When Life Feels Like a Mess

I don’t know about you, but I tend to stress most when I feel out of control. And let’s be honest—most of life is out of our control. The dishwasher will break, kids will wake up sick the day of an important meeting, and the world will keep being… well, the world.

But here’s the thing: God was never asking us to control everything.

He asks us to be faithful, not flawless.
He calls us to obedience, not omniscience.
He reminds us that He is God, and we are not. (Whew, what a relief!)

Jesus said in Matthew 6:27, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Spoiler: Nope. But what does happen? We exhaust ourselves trying to control what was never ours to carry in the first place.

When I feel my stress levels rising, I literally remind myself: “I am not God. This is not my battle to fight alone.” And I take a moment to release my grip on what I can’t control and focus on what I CAN.

3. Take Practical Steps (Because Faith Isn’t Passive!)

Let’s be real—prayer is powerful, but so is planning, preparation, and practical wisdom.

If you’re drowning in stress because your schedule is overloaded, something’s gotta give. If your finances are causing anxiety, it’s time to make a plan. If you feel overwhelmed by household chaos, there are systems that can help.

Here’s what I do when stress gets out of hand:

📌 Simplify my commitments. (Saying “no” is not un-Christian, it’s wise stewardship.)
📌 Take care of my body. (Because being sleep-deprived and over-caffeinated is not the same as being “blessed and highly favored.”)
📌 Give myself grace. (Because perfection is a cruel master, and Jesus never asked for it anyway.)

We honor God when we steward our time, energy, and health well. Faith and wisdom go hand in hand.

4. Speak Truth Over Your Stress

I’ll be honest—some days, my thoughts spiral faster than my kids when they realize I bought the wrong kind of cereal.

That’s why renewing our minds daily is non-negotiable.

When stress tells me: “You’ll never get through this,”
I remind myself: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

When stress whispers: “You’re failing at everything,”
I say: “God’s grace is sufficient for me, for His power is made perfect in my weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Speaking truth over stress isn’t just positive thinking—it’s taking up the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) and fighting back.

5. Lean Into Your People

I used to think handling stress meant being “strong.” Now I know it means not doing it alone.

God designed us for community. Stress isolates. The enemy wants us to feel like we’re alone, like no one understands. But Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

Final Thoughts: You Are Not Alone in This

Jesus never promised a life free of stress. In fact, He said,

“In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

Stress is inevitable. But drowning in it is not.

So the next time life feels overwhelming, remember:

✅ Identify stress as a signal not just a struggle.
✅ Trust that God is in control, even when life feels chaotic.
✅ Take practical steps to manage what you CAN.
Renew your mind with truth instead of fear.
Lean on your people—you weren’t meant to do this alone.

And most of all, cast your burdens onto the Lord, because He cares for you. You don’t have to carry this weight alone. 💛
