Anxiety: When You Can’t Just Pray it Away

There’s a Big Problem

As a person with a background in mental health and a life-long Christian, I feel the need to share the importance of understanding anxiety. While the general term anxiety is an emotion that all humans face, many in our world today are suffering silently. There continues to be a stigma when it comes to mental health, especially in the church. This isn’t to say that our pastors are falling short; they are working within the scope of their calling and knowledge. For this reason, Christians in the mental health field ought to serve and bring awareness and education.

It’s Okay to Get Help

Just as we seek the specialized advice of an accountant for our taxes or a dietician when wanting to improve our nutrition, we ought to seek those with specialization in the areas of mental health. It’s also important to note here that finding a Christian coach, counselor, or other professional is also significant. You can read more on that in a previous blog post, linked here.

There’s a huge need for mental health education and support for women in the Church. According to reports by various organizations, including the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting over 40 million adults.” The good news is that anxiety is a treatable condition, yet only 36.9% of people with it receive treatment. This can be due to a lack of access to professionals, the high cost of counseling or psychological services, and the stigma around mental health.

It’s NOT a Moral Issue

Many people may not realize that anxiety disorders, along with every other psychological disorder, start in the brain. Many also assume that anxiety is controllable and voluntary. However, like Dr. Daniel Amen, many notable psychiatrists have found a clear neurological link between anxiety and brain function. This means that anxiety is a medical issue, NOT a lack of faith issue. And another bit of good news, you can rewire your brain with coaching, counseling, or even self-help.

It’s important to note that some cases of anxiety may occur alongside other neurological issues and that’s why it’s so important to see a professional.

To sum up, I want to encourage you to seek out a team of support and encouragement for your mental health. It’s challenging to overcome these issues independently, and there are many ways of working toward inner healing. With that said, I will be hosting various FREE anxiety webinars throughout the year. I pray that God will use me to bring the knowledge and encouragement needed for mamas like you!
