If you’re thinking about starting therapy (or maybe you’re already a few sessions in), you might be wondering, “How long will this take?”
I get it. As busy women, we’ve got laundry piles that multiply like rabbits, kids who ask for snacks every five minutes, and a to-do list that could probably wrap around the earth twice. The idea of committing to 16 therapy sessions might feel like just another thing on the list.
But hear me out—therapy isn’t just another chore. It’s an investment in your well-being so you can keep showing up for yourself, your family, and the life God has called you to live. And while 16 sessions might sound like a lot, there’s a reason why this number is so important.

1. Real Healing Takes Time—But It’s Worth It
We live in a world of quick fixes. We want Amazon Prime shipping for our emotional health—“Can I get two-day delivery on healing, please?” But just like you wouldn’t expect a broken leg to heal overnight, the same goes for your heart, mind, and soul.
- Sessions 1-4: We build trust, unpack what’s really going on, and start setting goals.
- Sessions 5-8: We introduce new coping skills and challenge some of those sneaky, unhelpful thought patterns.
- Sessions 9-12: You start practicing these new ways of thinking and responding, and real change begins to take root.
- Sessions 13-16: We work on long-term strategies, relapse prevention, and making sure you’re ready to fly solo with confidence.
If therapy were a cake (and let’s be real, cake analogies always work), stopping too soon is like taking it out of the oven before it’s fully baked. You’ll get a gooey mess instead of something nourishing.

2. Some People Benefit from Longer Therapy, Some Less—And That’s Totally Okay
Let’s talk expectations. Some people might feel amazing and ready to wrap up therapy in 12-16 sessions, while others find that longer-term support works better for their journey. Neither is right or wrong—it’s about what YOU need.
For example:
- If you’re working through a specific issue (like anxiety, mild depression, or stress management), 16-20 sessions might be just the right amount.
- If you’re healing from deeper wounds, trauma, or long-standing struggles, you might find that ongoing therapy is the best way to continue growing.
- And if you’re just here for a few sessions to vent about how your husband loads the dishwasher incorrectly? That’s fine too. (Just kidding. Sort of.)
The point? Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Some people get what they need quickly, and others benefit from longer-term support. But what I DON’T recommend is quitting too soon—right when things are starting to change for the better.
3. The “I Feel Better, So I’ll Just Stop” Trap
One of the biggest reasons people leave therapy early is because they start to feel better. And that’s wonderful! That’s exactly what we want. But feeling better doesn’t always mean the deeper work is done.
Imagine you start an exercise routine, and after two weeks, you’re feeling stronger. Do you stop working out? No! Because if you do, those muscles (a.k.a. all that progress you made) might weaken.
Therapy is the same way. Once you’ve started building healthier thought patterns, stronger boundaries, and a deeper understanding of yourself, we want to make sure those changes last.
God is in the business of transformation, and that often takes more than just a few weeks. Philippians 1:6 reminds us:
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Healing is a journey, not a quick fix. And God walks with you every step of the way.
4. Therapy Is an Act of Stewardship Over Your Mind and Heart
As Christian women, we pour so much into others—our families, our churches, our communities. But we often forget to invest in ourselves.
Here’s the truth: Your mental and emotional health matters to God. Taking time for therapy isn’t selfish—it’s an act of stewardship. How can you pour into others if your own cup is empty?
Committing to at least 16 sessions helps you:
✅ Build a solid foundation for healing.
✅ Gain tools that last beyond therapy.
✅ Deepen your faith as you learn to trust God in your healing journey.
Final Thought: Give Yourself the Gift of Time
So if you’re wondering, “Do I really need 16 sessions?” my encouragement is this: Give yourself the gift of time. You don’t have to rush. You don’t have to have it all figured out. And you definitely don’t have to do this alone.
God is with you, and I’m here to walk alongside you in this journey. Therapy isn’t about staying stuck—it’s about learning, growing, and stepping into the abundant life that Jesus promised (John 10:10).
So let’s do this together. One session at a time. One step at a time. You’ve got this. And more importantly, God’s got you.
